That process has been completely ignored with the disappearance of MH370. Every amateur with a computer has jumped on the bandwagon and swamped social media with voodoo science.
Even worse, professionals have jumped outside their own area of expertise to produce pretty computer graphics of their own theories before confirming source data. The biggest culprits however are the politicians and mainstream press editors who’ve selectively perpetuated unsubstantiated stories and not permitted scrutiny of their claims. They’ve published “interpretations” with no clear indication of the base facts to support their assumptions.
It’s better not to know than cling to a theory which has no basis in fact. We don’t have to know everything and some things will never be explained. Better and more honest to admit that, than follow and publicize a false trail.
What must be realized is the enormity of the task and the limitations of the technology involved. Political statements of “confidence” in the search have been misleading in their simplicity and raised public expectations only to cause disappointment when nothing is found.
